It looks like Transition town Mount Hawthorn is up and running. This is the latest addition to the transition town movements here in WA, following in the good foot steps of Transition Town Guildford. The Transition Town movement started in 2005 in England with the aim to cultivate a strongly connected community and a healthy environment. Since then the Transition Movement has become wide spread around the world as well into Australia.Sustaining the local food supply and addressing local waste issues is one of the many challenges local communities face. In 2012 Transition Town Guildford ran a backyard hen project called 'Sunny side up'. I have made contact with the project manager, a vet called Barb Frey. She has agreed to share her experiences for us to repeat such project in the City of Vincent. Grant applications will be submitted soon and we hope to get up and running. In addition to the Guildford project this one will also have a chook network component which aims to establish a chook hub in the local community where people connect and collaborate for feeding chooks and addressing problems that the holding of chooks brings as they may arise. I can't wait to get things going in Mt Hawthorn, as a pilot for other suburbs in the Perth metropolitan region.
